Blackest Night Number 8

I can't believe nobody has posted about this yet! FIRST OFF...SPOILERS! If you haven't read BN yet and are planning to, DO NOT READ THIS POST 'cause I'm gonna talk about the comic book (and hopefully others will respond)

Fair enough? All non-BN readers have left?

Okay, first off WOW! I am not surprised that heroes came back. It was kind of set up that that was gonna happen. And with some of the big guns having died over the past couple of years, it seemed obvious. I am surprised by some of the villains who are back. Max Lord? Professor Zoom? Captain Boomerang? and the BIG one...the Anti-Monitor! Interesting choices. I personally would have added Copperhead, but I guess Johns doesn't agree.

I guess the bigger surprise is who DIDN'T come back! No Ralph and Sue, no Tempest, no Damage, no Ted Kord Blue Beetle?...for some of these heroes I guess Dead is Dead. BTW, Hal's little comment that Dead is Dead from now on was a weird and week tag on. What makes him say that? What "proof" does he have that such a statement would be true?

A couple more shockers...It's not Kendra who's back, but Shayera? Wow, wasn't expecting that. I'm glad Osiris is back. He was an interesting addition to the Marvel family and didn't get to shine for very long. And Deadman is now Aliveman? Wasn't his power that he was dead? It's another interesting twist, for sure. Is he alive now, but can still possess people? Someone else pointed this out (wish I had noticed it) but he's the only one wearing a White Lantern ring when they were all resurrected, so is Boston Brand the head of the White Lantern corps? Can he resurrect the dead now? Hmmmmm....

The biggest head scratcher in all of this is Nekron's motives. His history is not very well fleshed (boned?) out which is not unusual since he'd only been in a handful of comics previous to BN. But he was supposed to be the main bad-guy, right? His connection to Black Hand and what he hoped to gain was, at best, sketchy. But he sure looked cool. And we were left wanting to see more of him. He'll be back, for sure!

What did the rest of you guys think? Did the book pay off on the whole, or did it leave you cold? Or was it a little of column A, a little of column B?

April Fools???...I seriuosly hope so

Well it's happened...someone in Hollywood has finally flipped their lid, popped their cork, fell a few cards short of a full deck...either that or they must be really bored.
Hopefully this is an April fools joke, but if it isn't...welL...THEN CEREAL LOVERS UNITE!!! Your dreams have finally come true (gag..cough...cough)

General Mills has optioned off the rights to some of your favorite horror breakfast icons!!!
That's right you heard it correctly...cereal icons!!!!

General Mills recognized the desire for new properties and has optioned the rights for three popular breakfast cereals to Summit Entertainment.

Franken Berry, Boo Berry and Count Chocula are all being developed for the big screen.

I $#!T you not...

FRANKENBERRY: JOHN C REILLY, WILL FERRELL, SETH ROGAN
BOO BERRY: JOHN TRAVOLTA, ROBIN WILLIAMS, WILL ARNETT
COUNT CHOCULA: ROBBERT PATTINSON, SAMUEL JACKSON, MICHAEL KEATON

Michael Keaton???

Well anyway these are the choices...what's your pick??

(God I hope this is a joke!!!!!!)

Production is to get underway this month with a wrap date on all three films slated for April 1, 2011. The tentative release date is April 1, 2012, April 1, 2013, and April 1, 2014.

Yea......well.....hmmmmm....

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

Ahem...YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!
Ahem...August 2010
Ahem...hee hee hee

Oh for the love 'a............

Ok anyway...it looks as though the newest version of the Wolfman just might have a sequel...but I think some of us already figured that out...but how about Frankenstein!!!
Well according to insider sources, that is just what is going to happen...eventually.
It seems that Guillermo del Toro is attached to do Frankenstein, but don't expect it any time soon...like in another three maybe four years.
Why is that?? Well it seems as though Guillermo is very engaged with The Hobbit.
I don't think Guillermo will pass this along considering how much of a fan he is of Frankenstein, given his huge collection of Frankenstein collectibles including tons of original art work by Bernie Wrightson...So I guess FRANKENSTEIN MEETS THE WOLFMAN won't be far behind huh???...Hmmmmm..
But it doesn't end there....
Neil Burger, writer and director of The Illusionist, is working on a script for...yea you guessed it, The Bride of Frankenstein.
And hey...now you see it...now you don't...David Goyer has been working on a new version of The Invisible Man, but his film won't be a remake, instead it will be a sequel to the original.
In Goyer's film the nephew of the original Invisible Man discovers the invisibility formula and perfects it. He's captured by Scotland Yard and is forced into spying for Britain as part of the brand new MI6....Hmmm...I smell a series here...Hey wait a minute wasn't it already???
Anyway...Dracula...yes the old bloodsucker himself...Universal is doing something much stranger with the character: they're making DRACULA YEAR ZERO, a movie about the historical Vlad Tepes Dracula, who inspired Bram Stoker's immortal vampire. But the film, to be directed by Alex Proyas, also weaves in elements of the vampire mythos.
The Man in The Rubber Suit...The Gilman....The Creature from The Black Lagoon...yes...the Jolly Green Devonian...uh for those of you who haven't a clue...Devonian was the age where the first fish evolved legs and became tetrapods.
Well it seems that after decades of stop and go on scripts and hoodoo...we may finally get a shot at seeing a brand new...version??...sequel??...but Carl Rinsch, a commercials director who had been in line to direct the Alien prequel, is now running with the project after Breck Eisner, Michael Eisners son, dropped off the project. And don't be suprised if it's in 3D as the original.

The Green Hornet Movie

"When the rights to the Green Hornet property were purchased by Mirimax, Kevin Smith was attached to write and direct this film. However, Smith pulled out of directing due to an insecurity of directing something with such a larger budget than he was used to. He stayed on as writer and wrote two drafts, but with no further progress with the script, the rights were let go and purchased by Columbia Pictures. Then, coincidentally, his Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008) star, Seth Rogen, became attached to star and write the screenplay."

My first introduction to Seth Rogen was his appearance in "Fan Boys" as Roach, the pimp. I have since then seen him in "Observe and Report" as a Bi-polar mall security guard. Both roles had me convinced that this guy could play diversified roles in both comedy and action films.
So when I had heard that he was going to play the Green Hornet in Columbia's up and coming new film by the same name, I both smiled and cringed at the same time.

The first question that came to mind was - could he portray the role immortalized by Van Williams in 1966 and Warren Hull in 1941?

To some individuals this may seem unimportant, but if you're a fan of the old films and their sequels it might kind of bother you if the character employed a hair bit too much humor in the role. Remember now that the history of the Green Hornet was much like that of the Lone Ranger AND that the character of Britt Reid is the great-grand nephew of the Lone Ranger. So naturally my concern was focused on the fortitude of Rogen and his acting ability to hold true to the characters nature without making a subtle mockery of it.

But I have viewed the 10 minute trailer, and although it is primarily a fighting sequence, I have to say that I am impressed...so far. But the trailer does remind me of an Independent production...sort of like "The Worlds Finest" trailer (Batman & Superman) with a bit of The Spirit and Max Payne atmosphere thrown in.

Dynamite Entertainment buys Vampirella

(March 17, 2010)

Dynamite Entertainment announced that they have bought all rights to Vampirella, the flagship character of Warren Publishing and Harris Publications for more than 40 years.

Dynamite Entertainment’s Nick Barrucci had this to say:

"Vampirella is one of the most well known and longest running comic characters in the history of the business. Outside of Marvel and DC characters, very few comics characters that debuted in the 60's still resonate with fans today. Our acquisition of this iconic brand is another step in Dynamite's exciting growth and builds on the ongoing success of our line."

Vampirella, created by Forest Ackerman, Archie Goodwin, Frank Frazetta and Tom Sutton, was originally created to get around the tightening requirements of the Comics Code Authority, by being printed in black and white as a larger format comic magazine, instead of a traditional four-color comic book. She was a vampire-like alien from the planet Draculon who traveled to Earth to battle Earth’s evil vampires. Later her story was altered for a more sophisticated audience. Since then, the character of Vampirella has been seen as something of a mascot for the success of smaller, independent publishers and an early representative of the modern bad-girl art movement.

Dynamite has carved a niche out for itself by adapting older, unused heroic properties for a modern audience. Among their current stable of characters include The Lone Ranger, Zorro, Buck Rogers, Red Sonja, The Man with No Name, Highlander and Robocop. Currently, one of their properties, The Green Hornet, is being written by director Kevin Smith and being adapted seperately for a big screen debut later this year with Seth Rogen as the lead character.

Comic books labeled "terrifying and corrupt"

I just had to post this.
From the BBC News dated March 22, 2010

Child vampire hunters sparked comic crackdown

When Pc Alex Deeprose was called to Glasgow's sprawling Southern Necropolis on the evening of 23 September 1954, he expected to be dealing with a simple case of vandalism.
But the bizarre sight that awaited him was to make headlines around the world and cause a moral panic that led to the introduction of strict new censorship laws in the UK.
Hundreds of children aged from four to 14, some of them armed with knives and sharpened sticks, were patrolling inside the historic graveyard.
They were, they told the bemused constable, hunting a 7ft tall vampire with iron teeth who had already kidnapped and eaten two local boys.
There were no records of any missing children in Glasgow at the time, and media reports of the incident began to search for the origins of the urban myth that had gripped the city.

The blame was quickly laid at the door of American comic books with chilling titles such as Tales From The Crypt and The Vault of Horror, whose graphic images of terrifying monsters were becoming increasingly popular among Scottish youngsters.

I won't copy the whole article, but you can read about it here:

Reminds me of the Mars Attacks trading cards uproar from parents in '62. LOL!!!

FAMOUS MONSTERS...Again...and again...and....

Another resurrection of a tried and true classic from the hallowed halls of macabreadamia.
The grave stone should read "Here Lies The Historic, Been There, Bit That, 1958-1983..err..1993-2008..err...2010-"
Anyway...Between 1993 and 2008 there were only 50 issues to hit the news stands and comic shops, today they are the most sought after pieces of monster memories than their ancient predecessors.
So now what will the summer of 2010 bring?
According to publisher Phillip Kim, "each issue of the new FM will explore everything from makeup and special effects to camerawork, demonstrating how readers can put together their own horror flicks on limited budgets. The magazine will also distribute some reader-made films."
Well....good luck Phillip, hope it all works out for you and FM.
The first issue will be released this July (keeping fingers crossed) and will start with issue number 251. It will be approx. 100 pages....(including adds???)
But.....correct me if I'm wrong...aren't there magazines out there already that cover these basics???
Nope...I'm not going to disturb the grave, let's see what happens come July.

CREEPY...The dead rise again (sigh)

Greetings from the underworld...Father forgive me for I have sinned it's been...no wait...that's the wrong content...Oh well...anyway...it's been three long years since my last postings...and superheroes are still in tights...well most of them anyway, however the rise of the 60's dead and forgotten from the long lost vaults of Warren Publishing has once again been presented in a B&W format...Yippie...Yahoooo...ahem...cough...cough...but alas...I wasn't very impressed with either the first or second edition...story wise that is...the art, in most cases, held pretty much to the format of the ancient tomes of days gone by...but there were the exceptions...confusing to say the least in their graphic imagery and probably more fit for a ZAP comics revival that a CREEPY one. None the less, just like any revival, or come back comic, CREEPY deserves its chance in the 21st Century. After all, they keep killing off Hawkman every thirty issues or so. For the new generation of comic book readers interested in the macabre of comics, I would highly recommend this latest revival of a tried and true series. After all, 45 years is quite a long time between first issues...at least the covers are still kick ass.
